On Tuesday (Jan 5th, 2021), President Donald Trump signed into law a comprehensive policy measure, the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020, to protect women veterans, student veterans and the veterans struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Jerry Moran(R-Kan) has spoken in the praise of the legislation by emphasizing the legislation will “provide support for every corner of our veteran community.”
“Equally as important, this bill improves care and reduces barriers for women veterans, so they can have greater access to the benefits they have earned and expands resources for veterans hardest hit by this pandemic, whether that be financial hardship or limited access to community resources for homeless veterans,” he said.
The legislation forces VA leaders to create “an anti-harassment and anti-sexual assault policy” that was pushed for several years by advocates. The bill also includes $20 million to retrofit health care facilities to aid in women veterans to receive safer and easier health care services. Several education bills for veterans, measures about the job retraining programs and more were also included in the legislation.
